The person behind MAROIS

Mario Obi

Founder MAROIS · former CCSO IMDvista · maker

From apprentice mechanic to global Chief Customer Service Officer — 25 years of industrial service, three continents, one common thread: people, customers, results.

That's how MAROIS came about — in two forms: Consulting for service organisations and Builds for custom PCs, prototypes and our own gadgets.

PHILOSOPHY

What drives me. How I think. What I believe.

After 25 years in industry I'm convinced: the biggest levers are rarely in the obvious. They lie in the balance.

THE MAGIC TRIANGLE

People

In the end, customer service always depends on people. Customer service is emotional. Satisfied employees deliver better service. That's not theory, that's physics.

Technology

Technology is decisive — but a tool, not an end in itself. The right platform at the right time, embedded in working processes, makes the difference.

Customer

Customer satisfaction is the result, not the starting point. It arises when people and technology are in harmony — systematically measured, continuously improved.

“These three areas have to be in balance. If one gets out of balance, the whole suffers. My job is to create that balance — and to keep it.”

— Mario Obi

How I work: the four phases →  ·  My partner network →

Service is never an island

For me it was always essential to see the big picture — to actively involve sales and development in service strategies. The overall concept counts, not the isolated organisation.

From reactive to predictive

The goal of every one of my strategies: away from firefighting — towards forward-looking, predictive service. Away from one-man shows, towards operational redundancy. With the right products and processes.

I enable — I don't do it myself

With the right tools and the right team set-up, a strong organisation emerges that carries — independent of individuals.

Passion: workplaces and teams

I'm passionate about shaping work environments and cultures, process design and team development. A good workspace is infrastructure for performance.

Career

From the field to leadership.

I've worked on every floor of the service business — from field service technician to the global leadership team. This breadth is no coincidence; it's the core of my consulting work.

The person behind the consultant

More than consulting.

Who I am professionally is closely linked to what I do privately. I'm a maker — someone who would rather build than buy. A lifetime of travelling the world professionally and personally, at home in the mountains. This attitude carries my work: get stuck in, try things out, keep going.

Mountains & adventure
Summited Kilimanjaro (5,895 m, Oct 2024). Hiking, climbing, thin air — always looking for the next summit.
Mountain biking
Trails in the Alps. Flow, technique, nature — two-wheeled meditation with adrenaline.
Skiing
Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau — piste or powder. Snow and mountain air are compulsory.
Travel
A life on the move — Asia, America, Europe, Africa. Every journey a new perspective on people and leadership.
Foreign cultures
Curiosity about people, traditions and ways of life — travelling on all continents, professionally and privately.
Cooking & cuisine
Inspired by Asian markets — I cook what I discover on my travels. Cuisine as a bridge between worlds.
Custom PC builds & 3D printing
25+ own builds. Mini-ITX, SFF, cases in wood, glass and aluminium. Workshop in the basement — every part made by hand.
Engineering & maker
CAD design, own developments, workshop work. I'd rather build than buy — whether PC, furniture or gadget.

"Building is more fun than using. The same philosophy applies in consulting: develop solutions, don't just describe them. And sometimes it takes Kilimanjaro to change perspective."

REFERENCE PROJECTS

Projects that show what I mean.

No theory. No slides. Real organisations, real numbers, real results.

BUILT FROM ZERO 2014 – 2018

From one-man show to global service organisation

Comet Technology AG — internal start-up IBIM

15

EMPLOYEES

STARTING POINT

A new technology division within the Comet Group — with growth ambitions but without any service infrastructure. The entire customer service rested on a single person. No processes, no structure, no system.

MANDATE

Build a professional, scalable service organisation — from scratch. With its own P&L, clear structures and the ability to carry international growth.

WHAT WAS BUILT

→

Complete build-up of the service organisation from 1 to 15 employees in a matrix structure

→

Teams in Switzerland and Asia — international coordination and local responsibility

→

Defined and introduced all service processes: order processing, SLAs, escalation, reporting

→

Complete digitalisation of operational service processes

→

ERP rollout SAP and CRM integration Salesforce for the entire service unit

→

Built a profitable service business model with its own P&L — from reactive to proactive

RESULT

A one-man show became a professional, international service organisation with 15 employees in a matrix structure. The service unit developed from a pure cost centre into a profit centre with significant revenue and a measurable EBIT margin.

BOBST Grenchen AG — Director Customer Service & executive board member

>20%

STARTING POINT

An established, classic customer service — solid, but analogue. Manual processes, no system integration, no standardised product and upgrade logic. The subsidiary was operationally functional but not future-proof.

WHAT WAS IMPLEMENTED

→

SAP rollout for the entire service and subsidiary operation — integration of all operational processes

Introduced Microsoft Teams as collaborative work environment for 25+ employees

→

Digitalised expense management: paperless end-to-end process from entry to approval

SERVICE & WORKPLACE TRANSFORMATION 2021 – 2024

A clean service organisation — and a new work environment for 100 people

Bystronic Laser AG — Global Head Operations Support / executive board member

102

NEW WORKPLACES

STARTING POINT SERVICE

A service organisation without clear structures and leadership responsibility. The interface to product development was missing — quality topics and design-to-service approaches remained unaddressed. Bystronic is the world market leader for sheet metal processing machines — the service had to live up to that positioning.

STARTING POINT WORKPLACE

A grown, analogue office infrastructure — not designed for hybrid work, mobility or agile project work. As an executive board member, Mario was mandated to fundamentally renew the work environment for 100 people.

SERVICE ORGANISATION

→

Clear areas of responsibility and leadership accountability for all teams

→

Service project team as interface to product development — quality topics and design-to-service

→

Built a global second-level support structure — technical escalation coordinated worldwide

→

Leadership development: team leader level strengthened, responsibility delegated

NEW WORK ENVIRONMENT

→

Remote desktop infrastructure — location-independent work, fully supported

→

State-of-the-art IT infrastructure for 100 employees — rolled out without interrupting operations

→

Hybrid work and flexible workplaces — anchored in concept and infrastructure

→

Work environment geared to Scrum and project-oriented ways of working

PRESS · HOCHPARTERRE.CH · 16 NOV 2023

“Multifunctional workplace” — Hochparterre, the Swiss magazine for architecture and design, documented the Bystronic office project editorially. 102 workplaces on 1200 m² redesigned: no more fixed desks, three zones (focus · work · communication), 85% of employees rated the new concept positively. The pilot was so successful that further floors and foreign subsidiaries were to follow.
